The 4 Infinite States or The 4 Divine Dwellings:
Here, friends, the Bhikkhu with a mind full of friendly
loving-kindness
pervades first one direction, then a second one, then a third one,
then the
fourth one, as below so above, across & all around, everywhere
identifying
himself with all sentient beings, is he encompassing the whole
universe
with a mind full of friendly loving-kindness, with a mind wide,
developed,
boundless, cleared, exalted, pure & bright, free from hate and ill
will ...
Moreover, friends, the Bhikkhu with a mind full of understanding
compassion
permeates first the front, then the right side, then the back, then
the left
side, as below so also above, across & all around, far & reaching
all;
caring for & guarding all sentient beings, is he perfusing this
universe
with a mind imbued with emphatic compassion, with a spacious mind, a
refined
mind, infinite, purified, pure & brilliant, freed from anger any
enmity ...
Furthermore, friends, the Bhikkhu with a mind full of mutual &
sympathetic joy
suffuses the North, then the East, then the South, then the West, as
below so
indeed also above, across & around, universally, infinitely;
protecting all
sentient beings in his thoughts, he suffuses all galaxies with a mind
full
of genuine, mutual & altruistic joy, with an open mind, vast,
limitless, clear
pure & shining, free from any aversion and all bitterness ...
Finally, friends, the Bhikkhu with a mind full of well balanced
equanimity,
saturating first the frontal quadrant, then the right, then the rear
& then
the left quadrant, as below so above, across & all around; everywhere
& fully
he keeps pervading the all-encompassing cosmos with an awareness
imbued with
equanimity, abundant, expansive, immeasurable, calmed, a
mountain-like mind,
cultivated, endless, pure & dazzling, without hostility, without
resentment.
