Characteristics of the
First Jhana

   Thanx for a quite good core meditation question...
   Answer: By carefully evaluating these criteria:

           Absence of bodily pain.
           Absence of sense desire.
           _ _Absence of ill will.
           _ _Absence of lethargy & laziness.
           _ _Absence of restlessness & regret.
           _ _Absence of doubt & uncertainty.
           _ _Presence of directed thought.
           Presence of sustained thinking.
           Presence of thrilled joy.
           Presence of pleasurable happiness.
           Presence of unified single-pointed focus.
           Maintenance of the state for > ~30 secs.
