bodhisattvo bhagavān urubilvāyāṃ viharaṃ nadyā nairaṃjanāyās tīre bodhimūle sātatyakārī nipako bodhipakṣikeṣu dharmeṣu bhāvanāyogam anuyukto viharati |

sa rātryāḥ prathame yāme ṛddhiviṣayaj­ñāna­sākṣīkriyāyā abhijñāyāṃ cittaṃ abhinirnāmayaty anekavidham ṛddhiviṣayaṃ pratyanubhavati |

tadyathā eko bhūtvā bahudhā bhavati | bahudhā bhūtvā eko bhavati | āvir bhavati tirobhāvaṃ jñānadarśanena pratyanubhavati | tiraskuḍyaṃ tiraḥśailaṃ tiraḥprākāram asajyamānaḥ kāyena gacchati tadyathā ākāśe | pṛthivyām unmajjananimajjanaṃ karoti tadyathā udake | udake asajyamānaḥ kāyena gacchati tadyathā pṛthivyām | ākāśe paryaṃgena vikramate tadyathā pakṣī śakuniḥ | imāv api candrasūryau evamahardhikau evaṃ­mahā­nu­bhāvau pāṇinā āmārjati parimārjayati yāvad brahmalokād api kāyena vaśe vartayati |

iti bodhisatvo bhagavān urubilvāyāṃ viharaṃ nadyā nairaṃjanāyās tīre bodhimūle sātatyakārī nipako bodhipakṣikeṣu dharmeṣu bhāvanāyogam anuyukto viharaṃ rātryā prathame yāme anekavidham ṛddhiviṣayaṃ pratyanubhavati |

tadyathaikāṃ jātiṃ dve tisraś catasraḥ yāvad anekān api saṃvartakalpān samanusmarati |

sa rātryā madhyame yāme divyaśrotraj­ñāna­sākṣīkriyāyā abhijñāyāṃ cittam abhinirnāmayati divyena śrotreṇa viśuddhenātikrāṃtamānuṣeṇa ubhayām śabdāṃ śṛṇoti mānuṣāṃś cāmānuṣāṃś ca ye vā dūre ye vāntike |

iti bodhisatvo bhagavān urubilvāyāṃ viharaṃ nadyā nairaṃjanāyās tīre bodhimūle sātatyakārī nipako bodhipakṣikeṣu dharmeṣu bhāvanāyogam anuyukto viharaṃ rātryā madhyame yāme divyaśrotrajñānaṃ pratyanubhavati |

atha bodhisattvo bhagavān urubilvāyāṃ viharaṃ pūrvavad yāvad anuyukto viharati |

sa rātryā madhyame yāme divyacakṣurj­ñāna­sākṣīkriyāyā vidyāyāṃ cittam abhinirnāmayati |

divyena cakṣuṣā viśuddhenātikrāntamānuṣeṇa sattvān paśyati cyavamānān apy upapadyamānān api suvarṇān api durvarṇān api hīnān api praṇītān api sugatim api gacchato durgatim api yathākarmopagān sattvān yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti |

itīme bhavantaḥ sattvāḥ kāyaduścaritena samanvāgatā vāṅmanoduścaritena samanvā­gatā āryāṇām apavādakā mithyādṛṣṭayo mithyāḍṛṣṭi­karma­dharma­samādānahetos taddhetos tatpratyayaṃ kāyasya bhedāt paraṃ maraṇād apāyadurgativinipātam narakeṣūpapadyante |

ime vā punar bhavantaḥ sattvāḥ kāyasucaritena samanvāgatā vāṅmanaḥsucaritena samanvāgatā āryāṇām anapavādakāḥ samyagḍṛṣṭayaḥ samyagdṣṭikarma­dharma­samādānahetos taddhetos tatpratyayaṃ kāyasya bhedāt sugatau svargaloke deveṣūpapadyante |

iti bodhisattvo bhagavān urubilvāyāṃ viharaṃ nadyā nairaṃjanāyās tīre bodhimūle sātatyakārī nipako bodhipakṣikeṣu dharmeṣu bhāvanāyogam anuyukto viharaṃ rātryā madhyame yāme divyacakṣurjñānaṃ pratyanubhavati |

atha bodhisattvo bhagavān urubilvāyāṃ viharaṃ pūrvavad yāvad anuyukto viharati |

sa rātryāḥ paścime yāme cetaḥparyāyaj­ñāna­sākṣīkriyāyā abhijñāyām cittam abhinirnāmayati |

parasattvānāṃ parapudgalānāṃ vitarkitaṃ vicaritaṃ manasā mānasaṃ yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti | sarāga­cittaṃ sarāgaṃ cittam iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti | vigatarāgaṃ vigatarāgam iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti | sadveṣaṃ vigatadveṣaṃ samohaṃ vigatamohaṃ vikṣiptaṃ saṃkṣiptaṃ līnaṃ pragṛhītam uddhatam anuddhataṃ avyupaśāntaṃ vyupaśāntaṃ samāhitam asamāhitam abhāvitaṃ bhāvitaṃ avimuktaṃ cittam avimuktaṃ cittam iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti | vimuktaṇn cittaṃ vimuktaṃ cittam iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti |

sa rātryāḥ paścime yāme āsravakṣayaj­ñāna­sākṣīkriyāyā abhijñāyāṃ cittam abhinirnāmayati |

idaṃ duḥkham āryasatyam iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti | ayaṃ duḥkhasamudayaḥ | ayaṃ duḥkhanirodhaḥ | iyaṃ duḥkhanirodhagāminī pratipad āryasatyam iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti | tasyaivaṃ jānata evaṃ paśyataḥ kāmāsravāc cittaṃ vimucyate | bhavāsravād avidyāsravāc cittaṃ vimucyate | vimuktasya vimukto ’smīti jñānadarśanaṃ bhavati | kṣīṇā me jātir uṣitaṃ brahmacaryaṃ kṛtaṃ karaṇīyaṃ nāparam asmād bhavaṃ prajānāmīti |

iti bhagavān urubilvāyāṃ viharaṃ nadyā nairaṃjanāyās tīre bodhimūle kṛtakṛtyaḥ kṛtakaraṇīyaḥ saṃbuddhabodhis tejodhātuṃ samāpannaḥ |

Section 1

atha dvayor brahmakāyikayor devatayor etad abhavat |

ayaṃ buddho bhagavān urubilvāyāṃ viharati nadyā nairaṃjanāyās tīre bodhimūle acirābhisaṃbuddhabodhis tejodhātusamāpannaḥ saptāham ekaparyaṃkenātināmayati | na cainaṃ kaścit piṇḍakena pratipādayati | yannu mayam enaṃ gatvā pratyekapratyekaṃ gāthābhir abhiṣtuyāma iti |

atha dve brahmakāyike devate tadyathā balavān puruṣaḥ sammiṃjitaṃ vā bāhuṃ prasārayet prasāritaṃ vā samiñjayed evam eva dve brahmakāyike devate brahmaloke ’ntarhite bhagavataḥ purataḥ pratyasthātām ||

athaikā brahmakāyikā devatā gāthāṃ babhāṣe |

uttiṣṭha vijitasagrāma
sārthavāhānigha vicara loke |
deśaya sugata varadharmaṃ
bhaviṣ­yaṃ­ti dharmaratnasyājñātāraḥ || 1 ||

dvitīyā brahmakāyikā devatā tasyāṃ velāyāṃ gāthāṃ babhāṣe |

uttiṣṭha vijitasaṃgrāma
rṇalopānigha vicara loke |
cittaṃ hi te suviśuddham
paṃ­cadaśyāṃ va candraḥ paripūṛṇaḥ || 2 ||

ity uktvā dve brahma­kāyike devate tatraivāntarhite

atha bhagavāṃs tasyātyayāt tasmāt samādher vyutthāya tasyāṃ velāyām thā babhāṣe |

yac ca kāmasukhaṃ loke
yac cāpi divijaṃ sukham |
ṭṛṣnākṣayasukhasyaitat
kalāṃ nārghati ṣoḍaśīm || 1 ||

nikṣipya hi guruṃ bhāraṃ
nādadyād aparaṃ punaḥ |
bhārasya duḥkham ādānaṃ
bhāranikṣepaṇaṃ sukham || 2 ||

sarvaṭṛṣṇā viprahāya
sarva­saṃs­kāra­saṃ­kṣayāt
sarvopadhi­parij­ñānān
nāgacchanti punarbhavam || 3 ||

Section 2

vimuktiprītisukhaprati­saṃ­vedī buddho bhagavān saptāham ekaparyaṃkeṇātināmayati sa na kenāpi piṇḍakena pratipāditaḥ

tena khalu samayena tripusabhallikau vaṇijau paṃcamātraiḥ śakaṭaśataiḥ sārdhaṃ tasminn eva mārge adhvapratipannau babhūvatuḥ |

atha tripusabhallikayor vaṇijor anyatamāyāḥ purāṇamitrāmātyajñātisālohitāyā devatāyā etad abhavat |

ayaṃ buddho bhagavāṃ urubilvāyāṃ viharati nadyā nairaṃjanāyās tīre bodhimūle acirābhisaṃbuddho vimuktiprītisukhaprati­saṃ­vedī | buddho bhagavāṃ saptāham ekaparyaṃ­keātināmayati sa na kenacit piṇḍakena pratipāditaḥ | taṃ tripusabhallikau vaṇijau tatprathamataḥ piṇḍakena pratipādayetāṃ tat syāt tripusabhallikayor vaṇijor dīrgharātram arthāya hitāya sukhāya | yanv ahaṃ svayam evautsukyam āpadyeyaṃ piṇḍapātapratipādanahetor iti |

atha sā devatā sarvaṃ śakaṭasārthaṃ udāreṇāvabhāsena spharitvā tripusabhallikau vaṇijāv idam avocat |

vaṇijau vaṇijāv ayaṃ buddho bhagavāṃ urubilvāyāṃ viharati nadyā nairaṃjanāyās tīre bodhimūle acirābhi­saṃ­buddho vimuktiprītisukhaprati­saṃ­vedī | buddho bhagavāṃ saptāham ekaparyaṃkenātināmayati sa na kenacit piṇḍakena pratipāditaḥ | taṃ yuvāṃ tatprathamataḥ piṇḍakena pratipādayataṃ tad yuṣmākaṃ bhaviṣyati dīrgharātram arthāya hitāya sukhāya |

atha tripusabhallikayor vaṇijor etad abhavan na batāvaro buddho bhaviyati nāvaraṃ dharmākhyānam | yatredānīm devatā apy autsukyam āpadyante tasya tathāga­tasyārhataḥ samyaksaṃbuddhasya piṇḍapātapratipādanahetor |

iti viditvā prabhūtaṃ madhu ca manthāś cādāya yena bhagavāṃs tenopajagmatur |

upetya bhagavatpādau śirasā vanditvaikānte ’sthātām | ekāntasthitau tripusabhallikau vaṇijāv idam avocatām |

ihāvābhyāṃ bhadanta bhagavantam uddiśya piṇḍapāta ānīta prabhūtaṃ madhu ca manthāḥ | taṃ bhagavāṃ pratigṛhṇātv anukaṃpām upadāyety |

atha bhagavata etad abhavan na mama pratirūpaṃ syād yad ahaṃ pāṇinā piṇḍapātaṃ pratigrahīṣyāmi tadyathāṃyatīrthikaḥ | yanv ahaṃ samanvāhareyaṃ kutra pūrvakaiḥ samyaksaṃbuddhaiḥ piṇḍapātaḥ pratigṛhīto hitāya prāṇinām |

devatā bhagavata ārocayanti | pātre bhadanta pūrvakaiḥ samyaksaṃbuddhaiḥ piṇḍapātaḥ pratigṛhīto hitāya prāṇinām | bhagavato ’pi samanvāḥrtya jñānadarśanaṃ pravartate pātre pūrvakaiḥ samyaksaṃbuddhaiḥ piṇḍapātaḥ pratigṛhīto hitāya prāṇinām iti |

tatra bhagavataḥ pātreṇa pātrakāryam utpannam |

atha catvāro mahārājāno bhagavataḥ pātreṇa utpannaṃ pātrakāryaṃ viditvā anyatarasmāt pāṣāṇamayāt parvatāc catvāri śailamayāni pātrāṇy amanuṣyakṛtāny amanuṣyaniṣṭhitāni svacchāni śucīni niṣpratigandhāny ādāya yena bhagavāṃs tenopajagmur |

upetya bhagavatpādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte tasthur |

e­kāntas­thitāś catvāro mahārājāno bhagavaṃtam idam avocan |

ihāsmābhir bhadanta bhagavataḥ pātreṇotpannaṃ pātrakāryaṃ viditvā anyatarasmāt pāṣāṇamayāt parvatāc catvāri śailamayāni pātrāṇy amanuṣyakṛtāny amanuṣyaniṣṭhitāni acchāni śucīni niṣpratigandhāny ānītāni | atra bhagavāṃs tripusabhallikayor vaṇijoḥ piṇḍapātaṃ pratigṛhṇātu hitāya prāṇinām |

atha bhagavata etad abhavat| saced ekasya mahārājñaḥ pātraṃ pratigṛhīṣyāmi trayāṇāṃ bhaviṣyaty anyathātvam | saced dvayos trayāṇāṃ pratigṛhīṣyāmi dvayor ekasya bhaviṣyaty anyathātvam | yanv ahaṃ caturṇāṃ mahārājñāṃ pātrāṇi pratigṛhya ekaṃ pātram adhimucyeyam |

atha bhagavāṃś caturṇāṃ mahārājñāṃ pātrāṇi pratigṛhya ekaṃ pātram adhimuktavāṃ |

tatra bhagavatā tripusabhallikayor vaṇijoḥ piṇḍapātaḥ pratigṛhīto hitāya prāṇinām |

tatra bhagavāṃs tripusabhallikau vaṇijāv āmaṃtrayati | eta yuvāṃ vaṇijau buddha śaraṇaṃ gacchatāṃ dharmaṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchatāṃ yo ’sau bhaviṣyaty anāgate ’dhvani saṃgho nāma tam api yuvāṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchatāṃ |

etāv āvāṃ bhadanta buddhaṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchāva dharmaṃ śaraṇam gacchāva yo ’sau bhaviṣyaty anāgate ’dhvani saṃgho nāma tam apy āvām śaraṇaṃ gacchāvaḥ |

atha bhagavāṃs tripusabhallikayor vaṇijos tad dānam anayā abhyanumodananayā abhyanumodate |

sukho vipākah puṇyānām
abhiprāyaḥ saṃrdhyate |
kṣipraṃ ca paramāṃ śāntiṃ
nirvṛtiṃ so ’dhigacchati |

parato ye upasargā
devatā mārakāyikāḥ |
na śaknuvanty antarāyaṃ
kṛtapuṇyasya kartu vai || 2 ||

saced dhi sa vyāyatate
āryaprajñāya tyāgavāṃ |
duḥkhasyāntakriyāyaiva
phāṣaṃ bhavati vipaśyataḥ || 3 ||

atha tripusabhallikau vaṇijau bhagavato bhāṣitam abhinandyānumodya bhagavatpādau śirasā vanditvā bhagavato ’ntikāt prakrāntau |

atha bhagavāṃ tripusabhallikayor vaṇijor antikāt piṇḍapātam ādāyānyatarasmiṃ pradeśe bhaktakṛtyam akārṣīt

tatra madhv api vātikaṃ manthā api vātikās tena bhagavato vātābādhikaṃ glānyam utpannam |

atha māraḥ pāpīyāṃ bhagavato vātābādhikaṃ glānyaṃ viditvā yena bhagavāṃs tenopajagāma | upetya bhagavaṃtam idam avocat |

pari­nirvāhi bhagavaṃ parinirvāṇasamayaḥ sugatasya |

atha śakro devendro bhagavato vātābādhikaṃ glānyam utpannaṃ viditvā yasyā jaṃbvā nāmnā jaṃbudvīpaś ca prajñāyate tasyā nātidūre mahad dharītakīvanaṃ tato harītakīr varṇagandharasopetā ādāya yena bhagavāṃs tenopajagāma | upetya bhagavatpādau śirasā vanditvaikānte asthād |

entasthitaḥ śakro devendro bhagavantam idam avocat | ihāhaṃ bhadata bhagavato vātābādhikaṃ glānyam utpannaṃ viditvā yasyā jambvā nāmnā jambudvīpaḥ prajñāyate tasyā nātidūre mahad dharītakīvanaṃ tato mayā harītakyo varṇagandharasopetā ānītās tā bhagavān paribhuṅktāṃ tā bhagavatā paribhuktā vātaṃ cānulomayiṣyanti vātābādhikaṃ ca glānyaṃ praśamayiṣyanti |

tā bhagavān paribhuktavāṃ bhagavatā paribhuktā vātaṃ cānulomayanti vātābādhikaṃ ca glānyaṃ praśamayanti tena bhagavataḥ kṣamaṇīyataraṃ cābhūd yāpanīyataraṃ ca |

atha bhagavān yathābhiramyaṃ bodhimūle vihṛtya yena mucalindasyaga­rājasya bhavanaṃ tenopajagāma | upetyān­yatamaṃ vṛkṣamūlaṃ niḥśritya niṣaṇṇaḥ paryaṃgaṃ ābhujya ṛjuṃ kāyaṃ praṇidhāya pratimukhāṃ sṃrtim upasthāpya |

tena khalu samayena mucalindasya nagarājasya bhavane saptāhika akālameghaḥ samupāgata|

atha mucalindo nāgarājā saptāhikam akālameghaṃ samupāgataṃ viditvā bhavanād abhyudgamya saptakṛtvaḥ kāyena kāyaṃ veṣṭayitvā upari mahāntalṇ phaṇaṃ kṛtvāsthāt | mā bhagavata idaṃ saptāhaṃ śītaṃ bhaviṣyati mā uṣṇaṃ mā daṃ­śamaśakavātātapasarīṣrpa­saṃs­parśāḥ kāyaṃ paritāpayiṣyaṃti |

atha mucalindo garājā taṃ saptāhikam akālameghaṃ vigataṃ viditvā bhagavataḥ kāyena kāyam udveṣṭya aṅgadakuṇḍalavicitramālyābharaṇānulepano bhūtvā yena bhagavāṃs tenāṃ­jaliṃ praṇamya bhagavantam idam avocat|

mā bhagavata idaṃ saptāhaṃ śītam abhūd mā uṣṇaṃ mā daṃ­śamaśakavātātapasarīṣrpa­saṃs­parśāḥ kāyaṃ paritāpitavantaḥ |

atha bhagavāṃs tasyāṃ velā gāthā babhāṣe |

sukho vivekas tuṣṭasya
śruta­dharmasya paśyataḥ |
avyāvadhya sukhaṃ loke
prāṇabhūteṣu saṃyamaḥ || 1 ||

sukhaṃ viragatā loke
kāmānāṃ samatikramaḥ |
asmimānasya yo vinaya
etad vai paramaṃ sukham || 2 ||

atha bhagavān yathābhiramyaṃ mucalindasya nāgarājasya bhavane viḥrtya yena bodhimūlaṃ tenopajagāma |

upetya prajñapta eva tṛṇasaṃstarake niṣaṇṇaḥ paryaṃkam ābhujya ṛjuṃ kāyaṃ praṇidhāya pratimukho smṛtim upasthāpya saptāham ekaparyaṃkenātināmayati idam evaṃ dvādaśāṅgaṃ pratītyasamutpādam anulomaṃ pratilomaṃ vyavalokayan |

yad utāsmin satīdaṃ bhavaty asyotpādād idam utpadyate yad utāvidyāpratyayāḥ saṃskārāḥ saṃskārapratyayaṃ vijñānaṃ vijñānapratyayaṃ nāmarūpam nāmarūpapratyayaṃ ṣaḍāyatanaṃ ṣaḍāyatanapratyayaḥ sparśaḥ sparśapratyayā vedanā vedanāpratyayā tṛṣṇā tṛṣṇāpratyayam upadānam upādānapratyayo bhavo bhavapratyayā jātir jātipratyayā jarā­maraṇa­śoka­pari­deva­duḥkha­daurmanasyopāyāsāḥ saṃbhavaṃty evam asya kevalasya mahato duḥkhaskandhasya samudayo bhavati |

yad utāsminn asatīdaṃ na bhavaty asya nirodhād idaṃ nirudhyate yad utāvidyānirodhāt saṃskāranirodhaḥ saṃskāranirodhād vijñānanirodho vijñānanirodhān nāmarūpanirodho nāmarūpanirodhāt ṣaḍāyatananirodhaḥ ṣaḍāyatananirodhāt sparśanirodhaḥ sparśanirodhād vedanānirodho vedanānirodhāt tṛṣṇānirodhas tṛṣṇānirodhād upādānanirodha upādānanirodhād bhavanirodho bhavanirodhāj jātinirodho jātinirodhāj jarāmaraṇaśoka­pari­devaduḥkha­daurmanasyopāyāsā nirudhyante evam asya kevalasya mahato duḥkhaskandhasya nirodho bhavati |

atha bhagavāṃs tasyaiva saptāhasyātyayāt tasmāt samādher vyutthāya tasyāṃ velāyāṃ gāthā babhāṣe |

yadā ime prādur bhavanti dharmā
ātāpino dhyāyato brāhmaṇasya |
athāsya kāṃkṣā vyapayānti sarvā
yadā prajānāti sahetudharmam || 1 ||

yadā ime prādur bhavanti dharmā
ātāpino dhāyato brāhmanasya |
athāsya kāṃkṣā vyapayānti sarvā
yadā prajānāti sahetuduḥkham || 2 ||

yadā ime prādur bhavanti dharmā
ātāpino dhyāyato brāhmaṇasya |
athāsya kāṃkṣā vyapayānti sarvā
yadā kṣayaṃ vedanānām avaiti || 3 ||

yada ime pradur bhavanti dharmā
ātāpino dhyāyato brāhmaṇasya |
athāsya kāṃkṣā vyapayānti sarvā
yadā kṣayaṃ pratyayānām avaiti || 4 ||

yadā ime prādur bhavanti dharmā
ātāpino dhyāyato brāhmaṇasya |
athāsya kāṃkṣā vyapayānti sarvā
yadā kṣayaṃ āsravāṇām avaiti || 5 ||

yadā ime prādur bhavanti dharmā
ātāpino dhyāyato brāhmaṇasya |
avabhāsa­yaṃ­s tiṣṭhati sarvalokaṃ
sūryo yathaivābhyudito ’ntarikṣe || 6 ||

yadā ime prādur bhavanti dharmā
ātāpino dhyāyato brāhmaṇasya |

vidhūpa­yaṃ­s tiṣṭhati mārasainyaṃ
buddho hi saṃyojanavipramuktaḥ || 7 ||

Section 8

atha bhagavata etad abhavad |

adhigato me dharmo gambhīro gambhīrāvabhāso durdṛśo duranubodhaḥ atarkyo ’tarkyāvacara sūkṣmo nipuṇa paṇḍitavijñavedanīyaḥ |

taṃ cāhaṃ pareṣām ārocayeyaṃ taṃ ca pare na vijānīyus sa mama syād vighātaḥ syāt klamathaḥ syāc cetaso ’nudaya eva | yanv aham ekākī araṇye pravaṇe dṛṣṭadharmasukhavihārayogaṃ anuyukto vihareyam iti |

iti tatra bhagavata alpotsukavihāratāyāṃ cittaṃ krāmati na dharmadeśanāyām |

atha brahmaṇaḥ sabhāpater etad abhavat |

vinaśyati batāyaṃ lokaḥ praṇaśyati batāyaṃ lokaḥ yatredānīṃ kadācit karhicit tathāgatā arhantaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhā loke utpadyante tadyathā udumbarapuṣpam | tasya cādya bhagavata alpotsukavihāratāyāṃ cittaṃ krāmati na dharmadeśanāyām | yanv ahaṃ gatvā adhyeṣeyaṃ |

atha brahmā sabhāpatis tadyathā balavān puruṣaḥ samijitaṃ vā bāhuṃ prasārayet prasāritaṃ vā saṃmijayed evam eva brahmā sabhāpatir brahmaloke ’ntarhito bhagavataḥ purataḥ pratyasthād |

atha brahmā sabhāpatis tasyām velāyāṃ thāṃ babhāṣe |

prādur babhūva magadheṣu pūrvaṃ
dharmo hy aśuddhaḥ samalānubuddhaḥ |
avavṛṇīṣva amṛtasya dvāraṃ
vadasva dharmaṃ virajānubuddham ||

atha bhagavāṃs tasyāṃ velāyāṃ gāthāṃ babhāṣe |

kṛcchreṇa me adhigataḥ
khilā brahmaṃ pradālitāḥ |
bhavarāgaparītair hi
nāyaṃ dharmaḥ susaṃbuddhaḥ ||

pratisrotogāminam mārgam
gaṃbhīram anudurdṛśam |
na drakṣyanti rāgāraktās
tamaḥskandhena nivṛtāḥ ||

saṃti bhadanta satvāḥ loke jātā loke vṛddhās tīkṣṇendriyā api madhyendriyā api mṛdvindriyā api svākārāḥ suvineyā alparajasaḥ alparajaskajātīyāh ye aśravaṇād dharmasya parihīyaṃte | deśayatu bhagavāṃ dharmaṃ deśayatu sugato dharmaṃ bhavisyaṃti dharmaratnasyājñātāraḥ |

atha bhagavata etad abhavad yanv aham svayam eva buddhacakṣuṣā lokaṃ vyavalokayeyaṃ

adrākṣīd bhagavāṃ svayam eva buddhacakṣuṣā lokaṃ vyavalokayaṃ saṃti satvā loke jātāḥ loke vṛddhās tīkṣṇendriyā api madhyendriyā api ṃrdvindriyā api | svākārāḥ suvineyāḥ alparajasaḥ alparajaskajātīyāḥ ye aśravaṇād dharmasya parihīyaṃte | dṛṣṭvā ca punar asya mahākaruṇā satveṣv avakrāṃtā |

atha bhagavāṃs tasyāṃ velāyāṃ gāthāṃ babhāṣe |

avāvariṣye aṃrtasya dvāraṃ
ye śrotukāmāḥ pramodantu śrāddhāḥ |
viheṭhaprekṣī pracuraṃ na bhāṣe
dharmaṃ praṇītaṃ manujeṣu brahman ||

atha brahmaṇaḥ sabhāṃpater etad abhavat | deśayiṣyati bhagavān dharmaṃ deśayiṣyati sugato dharmam iti viditvā hṛṣṭas tuṣṭa pramudita udagra prītisaumanasyajāto bhagavatpādau śirasā vanditvā bhagavantaṃ triḥpradakṣiṇīkṛtya tatraivāntarhitaḥ |

Section 9

atha bhagavata etad abhavat | kasya nv ahaṃ prathamato dharmaṃ deśayeyam |

atha bhagavata etad abhavad yanv aham ārāḍakālāmasya prathamato dharmaṃ deśayeyaṃ yo me pūrvācārya eva samānaḥ paramayā mānanayā mānitavān paramayā pūjanayā pūjitavān parameṣu ca pratyayeṣu āptamanāś cābhūd abhirāddhaś ca |

devatā bhagavata ārocayanti saptāhakālagata ārāḍakālāmaḥ |

bhagavato ’pi samanvāḥrtya jñānadarśanaṃ pravartate | saptāhakālagata ārāḍakālāmaḥ |

atha bhagavata etad abhavad mahatī bateyaṃ jyānir ārāḍasya kālakriyāyai ya imaṃ dharmavinayaṃ nāśrauṣīt | sacet sa imaṃ dharmavinayam aśroṣyad ajñāsyat sa imaṃ dharmavinayam ity |

atha bhagavata etad abhavat | kasya nv ahaṃ prathamato dharmaṃ deśayeyam | atha bhagavata etad abhavat | yanv aham udrakasya rāmaputrasya prathamato dharmaṃ deśayeya yo me pūrvācārya eva samānaḥ paramayā mānanayā mānitavān paramayā pūjanayā pujitavān parameṣu ca pratyayeṣv āptamanāś cābhūd abhirāddhaś ca |

atha bhagavata etad abhavat | kutra nu paṃcakā bhikṣava etarhi viharaṃti | adrākṣīd bhagavān divyena cakṣuṣā viśuddhenātikrāntamānuṣeṇa paṃcakā bhikṣavo bārāṇasyāṃ viharanti ṛṣivadane ṃrgadāpe |

ḍṛṣṭvā ca punar yathābhiramyaṃ bodhimūle vihṛtya yena bārāasī kāśīnāṃ nigamas tena caryāṃ prakrāntaḥ

Section 10

tena khalu samayena upaga ājīvikas tasminn eva mārge ’dhvapratipanno ’bhūt | adkṣīd upaga ājīvako bhagavantaṃ dūrata eva | ḍṛṣṭvā ca punar evam āha |

viprasannāni te āyuṣman gautama indriyāṇi pariśuddho mukhavaṛṇa paryavadātaś chavivarṇaḥ kas te āyuṣman gautama śāstā kaṃ vāsy uddiśya pravrajitaḥ kasya vā dharmaṃ rocayasi |

atha bhagavāṃs tasyāṃ velāyāṃ gāthā babhāṣe |

na me ’sti kaścid ācārya
saḍrśo me na vidyate |
eko ’smi loke saṃbuddhaḥ
prāptaḥ saṃbodhim uttamām ||

sarvābhibhū sarvavid asmi loke
sarvaiś ca dharmair api nopaliptaḥ |
sarvaṃjaho vītatṛṣṇo vimuktaḥ
svayaṃ hy abhijñāya kam uddiśeyam ||

kam uddiśeyam asamo hy atulya
svayaṃ pravaktā adhigamya bodhim |
tathāgato devamanuṣyaśāstā
sarvajña sarvajña­balair upetaḥ ||

aham asmy arhaṃ lokeṣu
ahaṃ lokeṣv anuttaraḥ
sa­deva­keṣu lokeṣu
ahaṃ mārābhibhūr jinaḥ ||

jina ity āyuṣman gautama vadasi |

jinā hi madṛśā jñeyā
ye prāptā āsravakṣayam |
jitā me pāpakā dharmās
tatopaga jino hy ahaṃ |

kutra tvam āyuṣmaṃ gautama gamiṣyasi |

bārāṇasīṃ gamiṣyāmi
āhantuṃ dharmadundubhiṃ |
dharma­cakraṃ pravartayitum
yad lokeṣv apravartitam ||

na hi santaḥ prakāśante
vidit loka­parya­yaṃ |
śāntā hi nityato buddhās
tīṛnā lokaviṣaktikāṃ |

jina āyumaṃ gautama vadasīty uktvā upaga ājīvako mārgam apakrāntaḥ |

Section 11

atha bhagavāṃ kāśiṣu janapadeṣu caryāṃ caran bārāṇasīṃ gataḥ |

tena khalu samayena paṃcakā bhikṣavo bārāṇasyāṃ viharaṃti ṛṣivadane mṛgadāpe |

adrākṣuḥ paṃcakā bhikṣavo bhagavantaṃ dūrata eva dṣṭvā ca punar anyon­yaṃ saṃpratasthur kriyākāraṃś cākāṛsuḥ |

ayaṃ sa bhavanta śramaṇo gautama āgacchati śaithiliko bāhuliko bahulājīvaḥ prahāṇavibhrāntaḥ sa etarhi audārikaṃ cāhāram āhārayati odanakunmāsaṃ sarpistailena gātrāṇi mrakṣayati sukhodakena ca kāyaṃ pariṣiṃcati |

so ’smābhir upasaṃkrāṃto nābhivādayitavyo na vanditavyaḥ notthāyāsanenopanimaṃ­trayitavyaḥ anyatra prāg esanāni prajñapya evaṃ syād vacanīyah | saṃvidyante āyuṣmaṃ gautama āsanāni saced ākāṃkṣasi niṣīdasva |

yathā yathā bhagavāṃ paṃcakāṃ bhikṣūṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrāmati tathā tathā pañcakā bhikṣavo bhagavataḥ śriyaṃ ca tejaś ca gauravaṃ cāsahamānā utthāyāsanād ekatyā bhagavato ’rthāyāsanaṃ prajñapayaṃti ekatyāḥ pādodakaṃ pādādhiṣṭhānam ekānte upanikṣipaṃti ekatyāś cīvarakāṇi pratigṛhṇaṃ­ti evaṃ cāhur niṣīdatāṃ bhavāṃ gautamaḥ prajñapta evāsane |

atha bhagavata etad abhavac cyutā bateme mohapuruṣāḥ svasmāt kriyākārād iti viditvā prajñapta evāsane nyaṣīdat |

tatredānī paṃcakā bhikṣavo bhagavaṃtam atyarthaṃ nāmavādena gotravādenāyuṣmadvādena samudācaraṃ­ti |

tatra bhaga paṃ­cakāṃ bhikṣūn āmaṃtrayate sma mā yūyaṃ bhikṣavas tathāgata nāmavādena gotravādenāyuṣmadvādena samudācarata |

tat kasmād dhetor yaḥ kaścid bhikṣavaḥ tathāgatam atyarthaṃ nāmavādena gotravādenāyuṣmadvādena samudācarati tat tasya bhavati mohapuruasya dīrgharātram anarthāyāhitāya duḥkhāya |

ta evam āhus tayā tāvat tvam āyuṣmaṃ gautama pūrvikayā īryayā caryayā duṣkaracaryayā na kiṃcid adhigatavān uttaraṃ manuṣyadharmam alamāryaviśeṣādhigamaṃ jñānaṃ vā darśanaṃ vā sparśavihāratāṃ ca | kutaḥ punar yas tvam etarhi śaithiliko huliko bahulājīvaḥ prahāṇavibhrāṃ­taḥ sa tvam etarhy audārikam cāhāram āhārayasi odanakunmāsaṃ sarpistailena gātrāṇi mrakṣayasi sukhodakena ca kāyaṃ pariṣiñcasi |

atha bhagavāṃ paṃcakām bhikṣūn idam avocat | nanu yūyaṃ bhikṣavaḥ paśyatha tathāgatasya pūrveṇāparaṃ mukhasya vā viprasannatvam indriyāṇā vā nānākaraham |

āma bho gautama |

dvāv imau bhikṣavaḥ antau pravrajitena na sevitavyau na bhajitavyau na paryupāsitavyau yaś ca kāmeṣu kāmasukhalikānuyogono grāmyaḥ prākṛtaḥ pārthagjanikaḥ | yaś cātmaklamathānuyogaḥ duḥkhaḥ anāryaḥ anarthopasaṃhitaḥ ity |

etāv ubhāv antāv anupagamya asti madhyamā pratipac cakṣuṣkaraṇī jñānakaraṇī upaśamakaraṇi upaśamasaṃ­varttanī abhijñāyai saṃbodhaye nirvāṇāya saṃvartate |

madhyamā pratipat katamā | āryāṣṭāṅgo mārgas tadyathā samyagdṛṣṭjiḥ samyaksaṃkalpaḥ samyagvāk samyakkarmāntaḥ samyagājīvaḥ samyagvyāyāmaḥ samyaksṃrtiḥ samyaksamādhir evāṣṭamaḥ |

aśakad bhagavāṃ paṃcakāṃ bhikṣūn anayā saṃjñapaka saṃjñapayitu dvau ca bhagavāṃ paṃcakānāṃ bhikṣūṇāṃ pūrvabhakte avavadati trayo grāmaṃ piṇḍāya praviśaṃti yat trivargo ’bhinirharati tena ṣaḍvargo yāpayati |

trīṃś ca bhagavāṃ paṃcanāṃ bhikṣūṇāṃ paścādbhakte avavadati dvau grāmaṃ piṇḍāya praviśataḥ yad dvivargo ’bhinirharati tena pañcavargo yāpayati tathāga­ta pratiyaty’ eva kālabhojī |

Section 12

tatra bhagavān paṃcakān bhikṣūn āmantrayate |

idaṃ duḥkham āryasatyam iti me bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam ananuśruteṣu dharmeṣu yoniśo manasi kurvataś cakṣur udapādi jñānaṃ vidyā buddhir udapādi |

ayaṃ duḥkhasamudaya ayaṃ duḥkhanirodha iyaṃ duḥkhanirodhagāminī pratipad āryasatyam iti me bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam ananuśruteṣu dharmeṣu yoniśo manasi kurvataś cakṣur udapādi jñānaṃ vidyā buddhir udapādi |

tat khalu duḥkhaṃ āryasatyam abhijñāya parijñātavyam iti me bhikṣavaḥrvam ananuśruteṣu dharmeṣu yoniśo manasi kurvataś cakṣur udapādi jñānaṃ vidyā buddhir udapādi |

tat khalu duḥkhasamudayam āryasatyam abhijñāya prahātavyam iti me bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam ananuśruteu dharmeṣu yoniśo manasi kurvataś cakṣur udapādi jñānaṃ vidyā buddhir udapādi |

tat khalu duḥkhanirodham āryasatyam abhijñayā sākṣāt­kartavyam iti me bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam ananuśruteṣu dharmeṣu yoniśo manasi kurvataś cakṣur udapādi jñānam vidyā buddhir udapādi |

tat khalu duḥkhanirodhagāminī pratipad āryasatyam abhijñayā bhāvayitavyam iti me bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam ananuśruteṣu dharmeṣu yoniśo manasi kurvataś cakṣur udapādi jñānaṃ vidyā buddhir udapādi |

tat khalu duḥkham āryasatyam abhijñayā parij­ñātam iti me bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam ananuśruteṣu dharmeṣu yoniśo manasi kurvataś cakṣur udapādi jñānaṃ vidyā buddhir udapādi |

tat khalu duḥkhasamudayam āryasatyam abhijñayā prahīṇam iti me bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam ananuśruteṣu dharmeṣu yoniśo manasi kurvataś cakṣur udapādi jñānmaṃ vidyā buddhir udapādi |

tat khalu duḥkhanirodham āryasatyam abhijñayā sākṣātkṛtam iti me bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam ananuśruteṣu dharmeṣu yoniśo manasi kurvataś cakṣur udapādi jñānam vidyā buddhir udapādi |

tat khalu duḥkhanirodhagāmimī pratipad āryasatyam abhijñayā bhāvitam iti me bhikṣavaḥ pūrvam ananuśruteṣu dharmeu yoniśo manasi kurvataś cakṣur udadi ānaṃ vidyā buddhir udapādi |

yāvac ca mama bhikṣava eṣu caturṣv āryasatyeṣv evatri­parivartaṃ dvādaśākāraṃ na cakṣur udapādi na jñānaṃ na vidyā na buddhir udapādi na tāvad aham asmād bhikṣavaḥ sadevakāl lokāt samārakāt sabrahmakāt saśramaṇabrāhmaṇikāyāḥ prajāyāḥ sadevamānuṣāyā mukto nisṛto visaṃ­yukto vipramukto viparyāsāpagatena cetasā bahulaṃ vyahāṛsaṃ na tāvad ahaṃ bhiksavaḥ anuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhim abhisaṃbuddho ’smīty adhyajñāsiṣaṃ|

yataś ca mama bhikṣava eṣu caturṣv āryasatyeṣv evaṃ triparivartaṃ dvādaśākāraṃ cakṣur udapādi jñānaṃ vidyā buddhir udapādi tato ’ham asmāt sadevakāl lokāt samārakāt sabrahmakāt saśramaṇabrāhmaṇikāyāḥ prajāyāḥ sadevamānuṣāyā mukto nissṛto visaṃyukto vipramukto viparyāsāpagatena cetasā bahulaṃ vyahārṣam tataś cāhaṃ bhikṣavaḥ anuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhim abhisaṃbuddho ’smīty adhyajñāsiṣam |

asmiṃ khalu dharmaparyāye bhāṣyamāṇe āyuṣmatah kauṇḍinyasya virajo vigatamalaṃ dharmeṣu dharmacakṣur utpannam aśītīnāñ ca devatāsahasrāṇām |

tatra bhagavān āyuṣmantaṃ kauṇḍinyam āmantrayati |

ājnāta āyuṣmatā kauṇḍinyena dharmas tasmād āyuṣmataḥ kauṇḍinyasyājñātakauṇḍinya ity adhivacanam |

ājñāta āyuṣmatā kauṇḍinyena dharma iti bhaumā yakṣāḥ śabdam udīrayaṃti ghoṣam anuśrāvayaṃti

etan māriṣā bhagavatā bārāṇasyām ṛṣivadane ṃrgadāpe triparivartaṃ dvādaśākāram dhārmyaṃ dharmacakraṃ pravartitam | aprativartyaṃ śramaṇena vā brāhmaṇena vā devena vā māreṇa vā brahmaṇā vā kenacid vā loke sahadharmataḥ bahujanahitāya bahujanasukhāya lokānukampāya arthāya hitāya sukhāya devamanuṣyāṇām iti divyāḥ kāyā abhivardhiṣyanty asurāḥ kāyāh parihāsyante iti |

bhaumānāṃ yakṣāṇāṃ śabdaṃ srutvā antarīkṣacarā yakṣāś cāturmahārājakāyikā devās trayastriṃśā yāmās tuṣitā nirmāṇaratayaḥ paranirmitavaśavartino devās tena kṣaṇena tena lavena tena muhūrtena tena kṣaṇalavamuhūrtena yāvad brahmalokaṃ śabdo jagāma |

brāhmakāyikā devāḥ śabdam udīrayaṃti ghoṣam anuśrāvayanti |

etaṃ māriṣā bhagavatā bāṇasyām ṛṣivadane ṃ­rgadāpe triparivartaṃ dvādaśākāraṃ dhārm­yaṃ dharmacakraṃ pravartitam aprativartyaṃ śramaṇena vā brāhmaṇena vā devena vā māreṇa vā brahmaṇā va kenacid vā loke sahadharmataḥ bahujanahitāya bahujanasukhāya lokānukampāya arthāya hitāya sukhāya devamanuṣyāṇām iti divyāḥ kāyā abhivardhiṣyanti asurakāyā parihāsyante iti |

pravarttitaṃ bhagavatā bārāṇasyām ṛṣivadane ṃrgadāve triparivartaṃ dvādaśākāraṃ dhārmyaṃ dharmacakraṃ tasmād asya dharmaparyāyasya dharmacakrapravartanam ity adhivacanam |

Section 14

tatra bhagavāṃ dvir api pañcakā bhikṣūn āmantrayati

catvārīmāni bhikṣava āryasatyāni katamāni catvāri |

dukham āryasatyam duḥkhasamudayo duḥkhanirodho duḥkha­nirodhagāminī pratipad āryasatyam |

duḥkham āryasatyam katarat |

jātir duḥkham jarā duḥkham vyādhir duḥkhaṃ maraṇam duḥkhaṃ priyaviprayogo duḥkham apriyasaṃprayogo duḥkhaṃ yad apīcchan paryeṣamāṇo na labhate tad api duḥkhaṃ saṃkṣiptena pañcopādānaskandhā duḥkhaṃ tasya parijñāyai āryāṣṭāṅgon mārgo bhāvayitavya |

duḥkhasamudaya āryasatyaṃ katarat |

tṛṣṇā paunarbhavikī nandirāgasahagatā tatratatrābhinandinī tasya prahāṇāya āryāṣṭāṅgo mārgo bhāvayitavyaḥ |

duḥkha­nirodha āryasatyaṃ katarat |

asyā eva tṛṣṇāyā paunarbhavikyā nandirāgasahagatāyās tatratatrābhinandinyā yad aśeṣaṃ prahāṇaṃ pratinisargo vyantibhāva kṣayo vigo nirodho upaśamo ’staṃgamas tasya sākṣīkriyāyai āryāṣṭāṅgo mārgo bhāvayitavyaḥ |

duḥkhanirodhagāminī pratipad āryasatyaṃ katarat |

āryāṣṭāṅgorgas tadyathā samyagdṛṣṭiḥ samyaksaṃkalpaḥ samyagvāk samyakkarmāntaḥ samyagājīvaḥ samyagvyāyāmaḥ samyaksmṛtiḥ samyaksamādhiḥ so ’pi bhāvayitavyaḥ |

asmiṃ khalu dharma­paryāye bhāṣyamāṇe āyuṣmata ājñātakauṇḍinyasyānu­pād­āyāsravebhyaś cittaṃ vimuktam avaśiṣṭānāṃ paṃcakānāṃ bhikṣūṇāṃ virajo vigatamalaṃ dharmeṣu dharmacakṣur utpannaṃ tena khalu samayena eko loke arha bhagavāṃś ca dvitīyaḥ |

Section 15

tatra bhagavān avaśiṣṭāṃ paṃcakān bhikṣūn āmantrayate sma |

rūpaṃ bhikṣavo ’nātmā rūpañ ced ātmā syān na rūpam ābādhāya duḥkhāya saṃvartteta labhyeta ca rūpasya evaṃ me rūpaṃ bhavatv evaṃ mā bhūd iti |

yasmāt tarhi bhikṣavo rūpam anātmā tasmād rūpam ābādhāya duḥkhāya saṃvartate na ca labhyate rūpasyaivaṃ me rūpaṃ bhavatv evaṃ mā bhūd iti |

vedanā saṃjñā saṃskārā vijñānaṃ bhikṣavo ’nātmā vijñānaṃ ced bhikṣavaḥ ātmā syān na vijñānam ābādhāya saṃvartteta labhyeta ca vijñānasyaivaṃ me vijnānaṃ bhavatv evaṃ mā bhūd iti |

asmiṃ khalu dharmaparyāye bhāṣyamāṇe avaśiṣṭāṇāṃ paṃcakānāṃ bhikṣūṇāṃ anupādāyāsravebhyaś cittāni vimuktāni | tena khalu samayena paṃca loke ’rhanto bhagavāṃś ca ṣaṣṭhaḥ |

Section 16

tena khalu samayena bārāṇasyāṃ yaśo ’grakulikaputraḥ prativasati divādivam eva strīmayena tūryeṇa krīḍitvā ramitvā paricārya

śrāntakāyaḥ prāgbhārakāyaḥ pratiyaty’ eva middham avakrāntaḥ | tā api striyaḥ śrāntakāyāḥ klāṃtakāyāḥ prāgbhārakāyāḥ pratiyaty’ eva middham avakrāntāḥ |

adrākṣīd yaśo ’grakulikaputraḥ sarātram eva svapnapratibuddhaḥ sarvās tāḥ striyo vilolikā vinagnikā vikesikā vikṣiptabhujā nagnā pralapantyaḥ |

dṛṣṭvā ca punaḥ svake antaḥpure śmaśānasaṃjñā avakrāntā | atha yaśo ’grakulikaputro mahāśayanād avatīrya śatasāhasraṃ maṇipādukāyugaṃ prāvaritvā yenāntaḥpuradvāraṃ tenopajagāma upetyāpasvaram akārṣīt | upadruto ’smy upasṛṣṭo ’smi māriṣā iti | tasyāmanuṣyā dvāraṃ vivṛṇvanti śabdaṃ cāntardhāpayanti |

atha yaśo ’grakulikaputro yena niveśanadvāraṃ tenopajagāma upetyāpasvaram akārṣīt | upadruto ’smy upasṛṣṭo ’smi māriṣā iti | tasyāmanuṣyā dvāraṃ vivṛṇvanti śabdaṃ cāntardhāpayanti |

atha yaśo ’grakulikaputro yena nagaradvāraṃ tenopajagāma upetyāpasvaram akārṣīt | upadruto ’smy upasṛṣṭo ’smi māriṣā iti | tasyāmanuṣyā dvāraṃ vivṛṇvanti śabdaṃ cāntardhāpayanti |

atha yaśo ’grakulikaputro yena nadyā bārakāyās tīraṃ tenopajagāma |

tena khalu samayena bhagavān nadyā bārakāyās tīre bahir vihārasyābhyavakāśe caṃkrame caṃkramyate yadbhūyasā yaśam evāgrakulikaputram āgamayamānaḥ | adrākṣīd yaśo ’grakulikaputro bhagavaṃtaṃ dūrata eva | dṛṣṭvā ca punar āpasvaram akāṛsīd upadruto ’smi śramaṇa upasṛṣṭo ’smi śramaṇa |

atha bhagavān yaśam agrakulikaputram idam avocat | ehi kumāra idan te anupadrutam idam anupasṛṣṭam |

atha yaśo ’grakulikaputraḥ śatasāhasraṃ maṇipādukayugaṃ nadyā bārakāyās tīre ujjhitvā nadīṃ bārakāṃ pratyuttīrya yena bhagavāṃs tenopajagāma |

upetya bhagavatpādau śirasā vanditvā ekāṃte asthād atha bhagavān yaśam agrakulikaputram ādaya yena svo vihāras tenopajagāma upetya prajñapta evāsane nyaṣīdaṃ

niṣadya bhagavān yaśam agrakulikaputraṃ dhārmyā kathayā saṃdarśayati samādāpayati samuttejayati saṃpraharṣayati yā sā buddhānāṃ bhagavatāṃ pūrve kālakaraṇīyā dhārmī kathā tadyathā dānakathā śīlakathā svargakathā kāmānām āsvādādmavaṃ saṃkleśavyavadānaṃ naiṣkramyapraviveke ānuśaṃsaṃ vyavadānapakṣyān dharmān vistareṇa saṃprakāśayati |

yadainaṃ bhagavān adrākṣīd dhṛṣṭacittaṃ kalyacittaṃ muditacittaṃ vinivaraṇacittaṃ bhavyaṃ pratibalaṃ sāmutkarṣikīṃ dharmadeśanām ājñātuṃ tadā yā sā buddhā bhagavatāṃ sāmutkarṣikī dharmadeśanā tadyathā duḥkhaṃ samudayo nirodho mārgaś catvāry āryasatyāni vistareṇa saṃprakāśayati |

tadyathā śuddhaṃ vastraṃ apagatakāḍakaṃ rajanopagaṃ raṃge prakṣiptaṃ samyag eva raṇgaṃ pratigṛhṇāti | evam eva yaśo ’grakulikaputras tasminn evāsane niṣaṇṇaś catvāry āryasatyāny abhisamayati tadyathā duḥkhaṃ samudayaṃ nirodhaṃ mārgam |

atha yaśo ’grakulikaputro dṛṣṭadharmā prāptadharmā viditadharmā paryavagāḍhadharmā tīrṇakāṃkṣas tīrṇavicikitsaḥ aparapratyayo ’nanyaneyaḥ śāstuḥ śāsane dharmeṣu vaiśāradyaprāpta utthāyāsanād ekāṃsam uttarāsaṃgaṃ kṛtvā yena bhagavāṃs tenāṃjaliṃ praṇamya bhagavaṃtam idam avocat |

abhikrānto ’haṃ bhadantaḥ abhikrāntaḥ eṣo ’haṃ bhagavaṃtaṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchāmi dharmañ ca bhikṣusaṃghaṃ ca upāsakaṃ ca mān dhārayādyāgreṇa yāvajjīvaṃ prāṇopetaṃ śaraṇaṃ gatam abhiprasannam |

Section 17

adrākṣīd anyatarā avaruddhikā yaśaḥ kumāraḥ sve mahāśayane na dṛśyate | dṛṣṭvā ca punar yenāgrakuliko gṛhapatis tenopajagāma upetyāgrakulikaṃ gṛhapatim idam avocat | yat khalv ārya jānīyā yaśaḥ kumāraḥ sve mahāśayane na dṛśyate |

athāgrakulikasya gṛhapater etad abhavat mā haiva kumāraḥ corair vā dhūrtair vā svāpateyakāraṇād bahir niṣkrāmito bhaviṣyati | iti viditvā caturdiśam aśvadūtāṃ preṣayati svayam eva ca pradīpikāhastaiḥ puruṣaiḥ sārdhaṃ yena nadī bārakā tenopajagāma |

adrākṣīd agrakuliko gṛhapatir nadyā bārakāyās tīre śatasāhasraṃ maṇipādukayugam ujjhitaṃ dṛṣṭvā ca punar asyaitad abhavaṃ haiva kumāraś corair vā dhūrtair vā svāpateyakāraṇād bahir niṣkrāmito bhaviṣyati mā haiva kumāro tena tīrthena nadīṃ bārakām uttīrṇo bhaviṣyati |

athāgrakuliko gṛhapatis tenaiva tīrthena nadīṃ bārakām uttīrya yena bhagavāṃs tenopajagāma |

adrākṣīd bhagavān agrakulikaṃ gṛhapatiṃ dūrata eva | dṛṣṭvā ca punar asyaitad abhavad yanv ahaṃ tadrūpan ṛdhyabhisaṃskārān abhisaṃskuryāṃ yathāgrakuliko gṛhapatir asminn evāsane niṣaṇṇaṃ yaśam agrakulikaputraṃ na paśyed |

atha bhagavāṃs tadrūpān ṛdhyabhisaṃskārān abhisaṃskaroti yathāgrakuliko gṛhapatir yaśaṃ kumāraṃs tan naivāsane niṣaṇṇaṃ paśyati |

athāgrakuliko gṛhapatir yena bhagavāṃs tenopajagāma upetya bhagavaṃtam idam avocat |

kaccid bhagavān yaśaṃ kumāram adrākṣīt |

tena hi gṛhapate niṣīdasva sthānam etad vidyate yad ihaivāgatam asminn āsane niṣaṇṇaṃ yaśaṃ kumāraṃ drakṣyasīti |

athāgrakulikasya gṛhapater etad abhavat | nūnaṃ bhagavatā yaśaḥ kumāro dṛṣṭo bhaviṣyati tathā hi bhagavān evam āha | tena hi gṛhapate niṣīda sthānam etad vidyate yad asminn evāsane nisaṇṇaṃ yaśaṃ kumāraṃ drakṣyasīti viditvā hṛṣṭas tuṣṭaḥ pramudita udagraḥ prītisaumanasyajāto bhagavatpādau śirasā vanditvaikānte nyaṣīdad |

athāgrakuliko gṛhapatir dṛṣṭadharmā prāptadharmā viditadharmā paryavagāḍhadharmā tīrṇakāṃkṣas tīrṇavicikitsaḥ aparapratyayo ’nanyaneyaḥ śāstuḥ śāsane dharmeṣu vaiśāradyaprāpta utthāyāsanād ekāṃsam uttarāsaṃgaṃ kṛtvā yena bhagavāṃs tenāṃjaliṃ praṇamya bhagavaṃtam idam avocat |

abhikrānto ’haṃ bhadantaḥ abhikrāntaḥ eṣo ’haṃ bhagavaṃtaṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchāmi dharmaṃ ca bhikṣusaghaṃ ca upāsakaṃ ca mān dhārayādyāgreṇa yāvajjīvaṃ prāṇopataṃ śaraṇaṃ gatam abhiprasannam |

ta smiṃ khalu dharmaparyāye bhāṣyamāṇe agrakulikasya gṛhapater virajo vigatamalaṃ dharmeṣu dharmacakṣur utpannaṃ yaśasya ca kumāras­yānu­pād­āyāsravebhyaś cittam vimuktaṃ |

atha bhagavāṃs tān ṛdhyabhisaṃs­kārāṃ pratiprasrabhya tasyāṃ velāyāṃ gāthāṃ babhāṣe |

alaṃkṛtaś cāpi careta dharmaṃ
dāntaḥ śāntaḥ saṃyato brahmacārī |
sarveṣu bhūteṣu nidhāya daṇḍaṃ
sa brāhmaṇaḥ sa śramaṇaḥ sa bhikṣuḥ ||

athāgrakuliko gṛhapatir yaśaṃ kumāram idam avocat |

ehi kumāra niveśanaṃ gamiṣyāmaḥtā te śrāntakāyā kntakāyā paridevati |

atha bhagavān agrakulikaṃ gṛhapatim idam avocat |

kiṃ manyase gṛhapate yenedānīm aśaikṣeṇa jñānena aśaikṣeṇa darśanena catvāry āryasatyāny abhisamitāni duḥkhaṃ samudayo nirodho mārgaḥ api nu sa punar api gṛhī gṛham adhyāvaset samnidhikāraparibhogena vā kāmāṃ paribhuṃjīta |

no bhadanta |

yathā khalu tvayā gṛhapate śaikṣeṇa jñānena śaikṣeṇa darśanena catvāry āryasatyāny abhisamitāni duḥkhaṃ samudayo nirodho mārga evam eva yaśena kumāreṇa aśaikṣeṇa jñānena aśaikṣeṇa darśanena catvāry āryasatyāny abhisamitāni duḥkhaṃ samudayo nirodho mārgaḥ |

lābhā bhadanta yaśena kumāreṇa sulabdhā yenāśaikṣeṇa jñānenāśaikṣeṇa darśanena catvāry āryasatyāny abhisamitāni duḥkhaṃ samudayo nirodho mārgah |

sādhu bhagavāṃ yaśena kumāreṇa paścācchramaṇena yenāgrakulaṃ tenopasaṃkrāmed anukaṃpām upādāya | adhivāsayati bhagavān agrakulikasya gṛhapates tūṣṇīṃbhāvena |

athāgrakuliko gṛhapatir bhagavatas tūṣṇīṃbhāvenādhivāsanaṃ viditvā bhagavatpādau śirasā vanditvā bhagavato ’ntikāt prakrāntaḥ |

tena khalu samayena ṣaḍ loke arhaṃto bhagavāṃś ca saptamaḥ |

Section 18

atha bhagavāṃs tasyā eva rātrer atyayād āyuṣmatā yaśena paścācchramaṇena yenāgrakulikasya gṛhapater niveśanaṃ tenopajagāma |

adrāṣṭām āyuṣmato yaśasya mahallikā purāṇadvitīyā ca bhagavaṃtaṃ dūrata eva |

dṛṣṭvā ca punar bhagavato ’rthāyāsanaṃ prajñapayata evaṃ cāhatuḥ | niṣīdatā bhagavāṃ prajñapta evāsane | nyaṣīdad bhagavān prajñapta evāsane |

athāyuṣmato yaśasya mahallikā purāṇadvitīyā ca bhagavatpādau śirasā vanditvaikānte nyaṣīdatām |

e­kānta­niṣaṇṇe āyuṣmato yaśasya mahallikāṃ purāṇadvitīyāṃ ca bhagavāṃ dhārmyā kathayā saṃdarśayati samādāpayati samuttejayati saṃprahaṛsayati yā sā buddhānāṃ bhagavatāṃ pūrve kālakaraṇīya dhārmī kathā tad­yathā dānakathā śīlakathā svargakathā kāmānām āsvādādmavaṃ saṃkleśavyavadānaṃ naiṣkramyapraviveke ānuśaṃsaṃ vyavadānapakṣyān dharmān vistareṇa saṃprakāśayati |

abhikrānte āvāṃ bhadantābhikrānte ete ā bhagavanta śaraṇaṃ gacchāvo dharmañ ca bhiku­saṃ­ghaṃ ca | upāsike cāvāṃ dhārayādyāgreṇa yāvajjīvaṃ prāṇopete śaraṇagate abhiprasanne |

atha bhagavān āyuṣmato yaśasya mahallikā purāṇadvitīyāṃ ca dhārmyā kathayā saṃdarśayitvā samādāpayitvā samuttejayitvā saṃpraharṣayitvā utthāyāsanāt prakrāṇtaḥ |

Section 19

aśrauṣur bārāṇasyāṃ dvitīyatṛtīyacaturthapaṃ­camāḥ kulikaputrāḥ pūrṇo vimalo gavāṃpatiḥ subāhur yaśo ’grakulikaputra keśaśmaśrūṇy avatārya kāṣāyāṇi vastrāṇy ācchādya samyag eva śraddhayā agārād anagārikāṃ pravrajitaḥ |

śrutvā ca punar eṣām etad abhavan na batāvaro buddho bhaviṣyati nāvaraṃ dharmākhyānaṃ yatredānīṃ yaśo ’grakulikaputras tathā suku­māras tathā sukhaiṣī keśaśmasrūṇy avatārya kāṣāyāṇi vastrāṇy ācchādya samyag eva śraddhayā agārād anagārikāṃ pravrajitaḥ | yannu vayam api keśaśmaśrūṇy avatārya kāṣāyāṇi vastrāṇy ācchādya samyag eva śraddhayā agārād anagārikāṃ pravrajemeti |

atha dvitīyatṛtīyacaturthapaṃ­ca kulikaputrāḥ pūrṇo vimalo gavāpati subāhur yena bhagavāṃs tenopajagmur upetya bhagavatpādau śirasā vanditvaikānte ’sthur |

e­kāntas­thitāḥ pūrṇo vimalo gavāṃpatiḥ subāhur bhagavantam idam avocan |

labhemahi vayaṃ bhadanta svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajyām upasaṃpadaṃ bhikṣu­bhāvaṃ carema vayaṃ bhagavato ’ntike brahmacaryaṃ |

labdhavantas te āyuṣmantaḥ skhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajyām upasaṃpadaṃ bhiku­bhāvam | evaṃ pravrajitās te āyuṣmanta ekākino vyapakṛṣṭā apramattā ātāpinaḥ prahitātmā vyāhārṣur |

ekākino vyapakṛṣṭā apramattā ātāpinaḥ prahitātmano viharanto yadarthaṃ kulaputrāh kesaśmaśrūṇy avatārya kāṣāyāni vastrāṇy ācchādya samyag eva śraddhayā agārād anagārikāṃ pravrajanti| tad anuttaraṃ brahmacaryaparyavasānaṃ dṛṣṭa eva dharme svayam abhijñayā sākṣāt­kṛtvopa­saṃ­padya praveda­yaṃti kṣīṇā no jātir uṣitam brahmacaryaṃ kṛtaṃ karaṇīyaṃ nāparam asmād bhavaṃ prajānīmaḥ |

tena khalu samayena daśa loke ’rhanto bhagavān ekadaśamaḥ |

Section 20

aśrauṣur bārāṇasyāṃ paṃcāśad utsadotsadā grāmikadārakā yaśo ’grakulikaputro dvitīyatṛtīyacaturthapañcamāḥ kulikaputrāḥ pūrno vimalo gavāṃpatiḥ subāhuḥ keśaśmaśrūṇy avarya kāṣāyāṇi vastrāṇy ācchādya samyag eva śraddhayā agārād anagārikāṃ pravrajitāḥ |

tatra bhagavāṃ bhikṣūn āmaṃtrayate | mukto ’haṃ bhikṣavaḥ sarvapāśebhyo ye divyā ye ca mānuṣāḥ yūyam api bhikṣavo muktāḥ sarvapāśebhyo ye divya ye ca mānuṣāḥ carata bhikṣavaś caryāṃ prakramiṣyāmo bahujanahitāya bahujanasukhāya lokānukaṃpāyai arthāya hitāya sukhāya devamanuṣyāṇāṃ mā ca vo dvāv ekena gamiṣyatha | aham api yenorubilvā senāyanagrāmakas tena caryāṃ prakramiṣyāmy |

atha mārasya pāpīyasyaitad abhavad ayaṃ śramaṇo gautamo bārāṇasyāṃ viharaty ṛṣivadane mṛgadāpe evaṃ śrāvakāṃ dharmaṃ deśayati mukto ’haṃ bhikṣavaḥ sarvapāśebhyo ye divyā ye ca mānuṣāh yūyam api bhikṣavo muktāḥ sarvapāśebhyo ye divyā ye ca mānuṣāḥ carata bhikṣavaś caryāṃ prakramiṣyāmo bahujanahitāya pūrvavad yāvad aham api yenoruhilvā senāyanagrāmakas tena caryāṃ prakramiṣyāmīti yannv aham asyopasaṃkrameyaṃ yad uta vyākṣepa­karmaṇ­y=

atha mārah pāpīyān māṇavakavarṇam ātmānam abhinirmāya yena bhagavāṃs tenopajagāma |

upetya tasyāṃ velāyām gāthāṃ babhāṣe |

amukto mukta­saṃ­jñī san
kiṃ mukto ’smīti manyase |
mahā­bandhanabaddho ’si
na me śramaṇa mokṣyase ||

atha bhagavata etad abhavat māro ’yaṃ pāpīyām upa­saṃk­rānto yad uta vyākṣepa­karmaṇīti viditvā gāthāṃ babhāṣe |

mukto ’haṃ sarvapāśebhyo
ye divyā ye ca mānuṣāḥ
evaṃ jānīhi pāpīyaṃ
nihatas tvam ihāntaka ||

atha mārasya pāpīyasya etad abhavat | jānāti me śramaṇo gautamaś cetasā cittam iti viditvā duḥkhī durmanā vipratisārī tatraivāntarhitaḥ |

tatra bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayate sma | mukto ’haṃ bhikṣavaḥ sarvapāśebhyo ye divyā ye ca mānuṣāḥ yūyam api bhikṣavo muktāḥ sarvapāśebhyo ye divyā ye ca mānuṣāḥ carata bhikṣavaś caryāṃ bahujanahitāya pūrvavad yāvad aham api yenorubilvā senāyanagrāmakas tena caryāṃ prakramiṣyāmi |

evam bhadanteti bhikṣavo bhagavataḥ pratiśrutya janapadeṣu caryāṃ prakrāntāḥ |
