Origin story
bhagavān chākyeṣu viharati śākyānāṁ kapilavastusmiṁ nyagrodhārāme | tena dāni kālena tena samayena bhagavatā bhikṣuṇīnāṁ araṇyakāni śayanāsanāni pratikṣiptāni | grāmāntakāni ca akṛtāni | bhikṣuṇīyo gṛhiṇām upavasitehi vasanti | rāṣṭrā nāma bhikṣuṇī | sā dāni aparasya sākyasya udu-vasite vasati | sā dāni rāṣṭrā tasya śākiyakumārasya uddiśati | sā dāni rāṣṭrā prāsādikā darśaniyā avigata-rāga | so pi śākiya-kumāro prāsādiko darśanīyo | so dāni tāye trikkhatto de vaśikaṁ upalaṁkṛtaṁ kālyaṁ madhyāhne sāyaṁ | tāye dāni taṁ śākiya-kumāraṁ dṛṣṭvā abhīkṣṇaṁ saṁsevāya ca rāga-cittam anudhvaṁsayati | sā dāni mlāyati pāṇḍu-kṛśā dur-varṇā bhontī-m-api bhojanaṁ na chando bhavati |
bhikṣū dānīṁ pṛcchanti | kena tvaṁ bhaginī rāṣṭrā pāṇḍu-kṛśā dur-varṇā | kin te duḥkhati | kin te paryeṣāmaḥ | sarpis tailaṁ madhu phāṇitaṁ | sā dān āha bhotu bhotu ārya evam eva vartā bhaviṣyāmi | bhikṣuṇīyo pṛcchanti | ārye rāṣṭre kena tvam evaṁ pāṇḍu-kṛśā dur-varṇā | kin te duḥkhati | kin te paryeṣāmaḥ | sarpis tailaṁ madhu phāṇitaṁ | sā dān āha | bhotu bhotu āryamiśrikāyo evam eva vartā bhaviṣyāmīti | evaṁ eva upāsikā upāsikāyo | so pi śākiya-kumāro āha | ārye kin te duḥkhati | kena si pāṇḍu-kṛśā dur-varṇā | ācikṣāhi kīdṛśehi atra bhaiṣajyehi vā upakaraṇehi vā artho bhaveya | saced asmākaṁ na bhaviṣyati prātiveśya-kulāto uddhāra-dharmaṇā ānāpayiṣyāmi | antarāpaṇāto vā grāmāntarāto vā ānāpayiṣyāmi | sā dān āha bhotu dīrghāyuḥ evam eva vartā bhaviṣyāmi | dvitīyaṁ tṛtīyam api āha | ārye kin te duḥkhati | kenāsi pāṇḍu-kṛśā dur-varṇā yāvad grāmāntarāto ānāpayiṣyāmi | sā dān āha bhotu dīrghāyu evam eva vartā bhaviṣyāmi | so dāni śākiya-kumāro āha | na idaṁ āryāye kiñcit kāyikaṁ gailāyaṁ | caitasikaṁ āryāye gailānyaṁ | sā dān āha | bāḍhaṁ caitasikaṁ gailānyaṁ | so dān āha kathaṁ sahyaṁ bhaveya | sā dān āha | yadi evam icchasi evaṁ sahyaṁ bhaveya |
so dān āha | ārye kim artham ahaṁ necchāmi | yāyo dāni ahaṁ jalpāmi | ācikṣatu āryā kim ājñāpayasi | kiṁ karomi | kīdṛśehi atra bhaiṣajyehi vā upakaraṇehi vā artho bhaveya | saced asmākaṁ na bhaviṣyati prātiveśya-kulāto uddhāra-dharmaṇā ānayiṣyāmi antarāpaṇāto vā grāmāntarāto vā ānāpayiṣyāmīti | ācikṣatu āryā | sā dān āha | sādhu te etam artham karohi | so dān āha | na ārye evaṁ vaktavyaṁ | anyāhi ahaṁ kārkāṣāya-vasanāhi notsahāmy etaṁ arthaṁ kartuṁ prāg eva āryāya | āryayā mama guru ca bhāvanīyā ca | nāham āryāya evaṁ vaktavyaṁvyo | nahy aham utsahāmy etaṁ kāryaṁ kartuṁ | sā dān āha | sādhu tāva me āliṅgasva cumbasva stanodarañ ca me parimardasveti | labhyan mayā etan mātraṁ kartuṁ | sa mātrāliṅgati cumbati stanodarañ ca se parimṛśati | sā pi dāni tattakenaiva vinodayati | so pi dāni śākiyakumāro abhīkṣṇa-saṁsargeṇa apamlāyati |
yathā bhagavān āha | nāham bhikṣavo ’nyam ekaṁ spraṣṭavyaṁ samanupaśyāmi | evaṁ rañjanīyam evaṁ kamanīyam evaṁ vañcanīyam evaṁ mūrcchanīyam evam adhyohāri evam antarāyakaram anuttarasya yoga-kṣemasyādhigamāya yathā puruṣasya strī praspraṣṭavyaṁ strīyā puruṣa iti dāni tena abhikṣṇa-saṁ-sevāya apamlāyati | so dāni punaḥ punaḥ karoti |
sā dāni bhikṣuṇīhi vuccati | mā ārye evaṁ karohi naivaṁ labhyā kartuṁ | sā dān āha | evaṁ mama kriyamāṇaṁ phāsu bhavati | etaṁ prakaraṇaṁ tāyo bhikṣuṇīyo mahāprajāpatīye gautamīye ārocayeṁsu | mahāprajāpatī gautamī bhagavato ārocayati | bhagavān āha śabdāpayatha rāṣṭrāṁ | sā dāni śabdāpitā | bhagavān āha | satyaṁ rāṣṭre evaṁ nāma tvaṁ avaśrutā avaśrutasya | puruṣasya upari jānu-maṇḍalābhyām adho kakṣābhyāṁ āmoṣaṇa-parā-moṣaṇaṁ sādiyasi | āha | ām bhagavan | bhagavān āha | duṣkṛtaṁ te rāṣṭre | nanv ahaṁ rāṣṭre aneka-paryāyeṇa sarveṣāṁ kāmānāṁ kāma-nandīnāṁ kāma-nimnānāṁ kāma-mūrcchānāṁ kāma-pipāsānāṁ kāma-paridāhyānāṁ kāmādhyavasānānāṁ anaantam vadāmi | prahāṇam vadāmi | samatikramaṇaṁ vadāmi | tatra nāma tvaṁ imaṁ evaṁ rūpatvaṁ pāpam akuśalaṁ dharmaṁ adhyācarasi | naiṣa rāṣṭre dharma | naiṣa vinayo | naivaṁ śāstuḥ śāsanaṁ | naivaṁ kartavyaṁ | naivaṁ karato vṛddhir bhavati kuśalehi dharmehi |
atha khalu bhagavān mahāprajāpatīṁ gautamīm āmantrayati | sannipātaya gautami bhikṣuṇīyo | yāvatikā bhikṣuṇīyo kapilavastun nagaram upaniśritya viharanti | atha khalu bhagavān sannipatitaṁ bhikṣuṇī-saṁghaṁ viditvā etat prakaraṇaṁ bhikṣuṇīnāṁ vistareṇārocayati | peyālaṁ | yāvat paryadavadātāni bhaviṣyanti |

atha dāni gaṇḍaṁ vā piṭakam vā kṣatam vā puruṣeṇa pāṭāpayati vā upanāhāpayati vā aparāya bhikṣuṇīya ālambayitavyaṁ | na kṣamati sambādhe pradeśe gaṇḍam vā piṭakam vā kṣatam vā upahatam vā puruṣeṇa vodhāvedhāpayitum vā pāṭāpayitum vā upanāhāpayitum vā | sambādho nāma pradeśo upari jānu-maṇḍalābhyām adhaḥ kakṣābhyām | tena bhagavān āha |
